Abstract : The paper illustrates the main word2formation characteristics of the English acronym. While the initials of the content words play a dominant role in the formation of an acronym , the initials of the constructional words like preposition ,conjunction and article participate in the formation of an acronym as well . The paper also discusses the characteristics of acronyms such as the polysemous phenomenon , the parts of speech ,the pairing of the acronymwith its expansion , and the borrowing of the acronym in the target language.
