While visiting India, I was invited to dinner in the home of a colonial official. During the meal, a heated argument sprang up among some of the guests. The point at issue (argument) was whether a woman could face a crisis with the same perfect self-control as a man. Suddenly I saw the hostess stare straight ahead, her muscles contracting slightly. She silently motioned to a servant and he quickly placed a bowl of milk on the veranda. Since milk was commonly used as bait for snakes, I guessed
